How to run a game jam without a huge team
A great game jam looks effortless from the outside. Behind the scenes it's registration, teams, a schedule, judging, and a closing ceremony — usually pulled off by one or two organizers. This guide walks through the moving parts so nothing slips.
1. Set the basics
Decide three things first: the format (online, in-person, or hybrid), the dates and duration (48 hours is the classic), and the theme. A good theme is broad enough to inspire many directions but specific enough to spark ideas — "Tiny Worlds," "Second Chance," "It's Alive."
2. Open registration
Share a single public registration link. Let people sign up solo or as a team, and collect just what you need — name, contact, and a couple of custom questions (experience level, role). Cap capacity so you don't oversell the venue.

3. Build the schedule
Publish an agenda: kickoff, theme reveal, work blocks, mentor hours, submission deadline, presentations, and the awards ceremony. Keep the submission deadline a clear, hard line — and communicate it everywhere.
4. Judging and scoring

5. Reveal results and celebrate
Reveal the leaderboard live, announce the top teams, and hand out certificates — including for participation, not just winners. A verifiable certificate is a small touch that participants genuinely value and share.
6. Wrap up
Send a post-event survey, export the results for your records and sponsors, and publish a recap. A clean wrap-up makes the next jam easier to pitch.
